Sebastopol Geese and Nigerian Dwarf Goats

Sebastopol Geese

A local urban gardener enthusiast friend of mine is raising rare Sebastopol Geese in her backyard. Things got a little crowded by the end of last fall and being the act before you think kind of person that I am, I mentioned that I might take(well buy) a goose or 2 to add to the ambiance of my little farm adventure. Afterall, I breed rare sheep, so why not add a rare goose to the mix. So here you see Tux, a rare Sebastopol goose. The interesting feature about these geese is the curly feathers. He does not have curly feathers, you say? NO, he has the genetics though and when combined with a curly female I hope to have curly, grey offspring. For now though, I hope he will enjoy the duckweek in the pond and the grass and weeds in the yard. You may find your own Sebastopol geese by calling Jody Oches at http://urbanagrarian.webs.com

Hobby Knob Farm, Nigerian Dwarf Goats

I have had such fun learning to milk my neighbor's goats that I decided to get 2 of my own. Feeling like I have enough large animals I decided to get the mini's of the dairy goat world or Nigerian Dwarf dairy goats. I have always loved these little goats and am wondering now why I didn't do this sooner.

These goats would be ideal for the backyard/urban farmer or anyone that does not want to be overwhelmed with milk (like me).So next year, if I am ready, I will have some cute little Nigerian Dwarf kids and milk for my own cheese! You can purchase full sized registered French Alpines from my friend at Mountain Star Farm. My goats came from Heather Lane Farms here in Asheville. You can learn more about these and other dairy goats at the American Dairy Goat Association and Piedmont Dairy Goat Association websites. Having your own fresh milk and making your own fresh cheese is just another step toward food independence.
